Media Specialist Receives National Recognition
Kate Cummings, media specialist at Grimsley High School, has been selected from a national applicant pool to attend one of 21 summer study opportunities supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities. The Endowment is a federal agency that each summer supports seminars and institutes at colleges and universities so that teachers can study with experts in humanities disciplines.
Kate will participate in an institute entitled "Living and Being Chinese: Geographic and Ethnic Diversity in China." The four-week program will be held at Columbia University in New York City and directed by The China Institute.
The 30 teachers selected to participate in the program each receive a stipend to cover their travel, study and living expenses.

Media Center Receives We the People Bookshelf
Ferndale Middle School Media Center has been selected to receive the We the People Bookshelf on “Becoming American.” The Bookshelf is an award of 15 classic books on the theme of “Becoming American,” made possible through the National Endowment for the Humanities’(NEH) We the People Bookshelf program, in cooperation with the American Library Association (ALA). The 2005-2006 Bookshelf is made possible with generous support from the McCormick Tribune Foundation. Each library receives a set of the 15 books in English and 3 in Spanish, as well as posters, bookmarks, and other promotional materials. As part of the award, Ferndale will be conducting programs to raise awareness of these classic books and engage young readers.
